Bridge to bridge! A pleasant stroll on Lake Burley Griffin

Bridge to bridge in Canberra basically means walking or strolling or jogging or running or cycling or even segueing around the central portion of Lake Burley Griffin and walking along the Commonwealth Avenue and Kings Avenue Bridges.

It’s about 5 kilometres and it’s mostly flat except when you walk up and down stairs to get on and off the bridges.

Balloons

I went for a walk this morning and shot a few photographs. It was about an hour after sunrise so there was a little golden light. There were also balloons going up and you could hear the gas valves opening as the pilot needed lift.

Dead fauna

There was also a dead animal that stumped me in terms of identification. I asked on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram about weather is could be a platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). It seems that platypuses can be found in the stagnant cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) rich artificial lakes of Canberra but they’re not common. Possibilities included a wombat (yes, they are common in Canberra), a rabbit (these are plentiful in Canberra), a possum (again plentiful) and a water rat (hugely popular animals in Canberra given the numbers I’ve seen in Canberra’s artificial lakes).

Autumn colours

It’s also Autumn (today is Easter Monday) and the colours in Canberra are magnificent. Check out the leaves still on the trees in the photographs.

Tell me

If you live in Canberra, do you like the bridge to bridge? How often do you walk it?

  1. Wow beezootiful pics there Gary, the colours are pretty cool – that is aside from our unidentified friend. Any further clues?

    1. Thank you so much.
The National Capital Authority (an Australian Government agency) contacted me to ask where I saw it and they say it looks like a small wombat. I hope when they organise for its removal they can confirm.

    2. Poor thing. It makes me recall the image of a fox frozen solid in a thick block of ice on a cold night out. Ah, such is life.

    1. In March, around the Canberra day long weekend we have a balloon festival. It’s not as big as the one in Albuquerque, NM but it’s big enough for Australia. I was in Albuquerque in 2009 for work and was at the balloon fiesta one night. That was spectacular.

  2. I love hanging out with you in your world! It is so different in a million ways from mine. I wrote about a walk I did yesterday on my family blog–it was around a frozen lake!

    1. Yikes, a frozen lake, while it would be a nice novelty, it would mean living in a really cold environment. If it could be humid and cold like London, I could handle that.

    2. I’ll try to remember to FB you–That is the only blog I link on FB. I’m much more restrained in that media!
