Will there be one more frost?

Will there be one more frost before Tuesday? Canberra folklore tells us that heaters can only be used between Anzac Day and the running of the Melbourne Cup. For those readers not familiar with Anzac Day and the Melbourne Cup, both signify important events. One because it truly is important, and the other because of hedonistic indulgence and the exploitation of horses and [Sarcasm on] small stature humans [Sarcasm off].

A couple of nights in Geneva for work

Geneva for work

I spent a couple of nights in Geneva for work this week. I came across some Europeans who have trouble comprehending what is involved in travelling from Australia. I left Canberra on Monday evening and flew via Brisbane and Dubai before arriving in Geneva on Tuesday afternoon (late Tuesday evening in Canberra). Coming home, I left Thursday and arrived home on Saturday losing Friday altogether.

Téléphérique Salève cable car

Because of the way my flights worked out and to ensure the most economical fare structure, I got a few hours to myself on Thursday morning. I caught the number 8 bus from the Metropole bus stop to the Veyrier Douane bus stop just inside the border with France and a short walk to the base of Mont Savève where the Téléphérique Salève cable car station is. I’m grateful to a work mate who used to travel to Geneva frequently for the tip about the Téléphérique Salève cable car ride.

This photograph is a panorama I stitched together from about a dozen files I shot using my Sony fixed 35 mm compact point and shoot camera. I used Adobe Lightroom to piece it together and then did some extra editing in Aurora HDR 2019. I shot the files from the top of Mont Salève where the Téléphérique Salève cable car station terminates. You can see Geneva, its lake, and Lake Geneva’s famous water jet.

Why am I in Facebook jail?

I find myself currently in Facebook jail. On Wednesday morning I tried to share a link on a page I manage and I was barred. A dialogue box popped open saying I’m restricted from posting links and sharing posts until Tuesday 2019-10-15. I’m also barred from contributing to groups I’m not an administrator of.

In Memory of those who died, those injured, those who saved lives, and those who fixed bodies and minds

On this day in 2002, evil men, went out of their way to kill and maim people in Kuta, Bali. Those terrorists have thankfully been executed for their crimes. Unfortunately, the leadership responsible haven’t been executed. I’ve written about this before. Please visit and read about my thoughts on the first Bali Bombings.

I was able to speak with my dear friend, Professor Len Notaras, AM this evening which made my day.

Losing weight the wrong way

I’ll get to losing weight the wrong way soon. This week, I was in Manila for work. When I landed the air was warm, humid, and polluted. I can deal with the pollution when the air is warm and moist.

WHO WPRO Manila

Warm, humid, and polluted

The area outside of the border control region in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport is not air conditioned. It’s open to the outside and it was gloriously warm and moist. It was drizzling and about 30 °C (86 °F). While the air is polluted and has a distinct odour, my skin reacted well to the humidity.

Jemima the duck

Jemima the duck is apparently a thing. I’d never heard of Jemima the duck until this week.

Jemima the duck

Wednesday tea. Sous vide duck breast and kale sprouts. #yummylummy #foodphotography #lowcarb #noaddedsugar #ManFlu #sousvide #duckbreast Duck, Kale sprouts G’day food lovers I’m not feeling terribly hungry today. That said, I need to dedicate this meal to a work mate. Today we were discussing some taboo foods and when I mentioned that I was planning duck tonight my friend exclaimed that I shouldn’t eat duck because ducks communicate. She explained there are ducks in literature which speak and she sent me a picture of a duck named Jemima which is apparently a famous duck for children. I’ve never heard of Jemima the duck so I’m dedicating this meal to my work friend and naming my sous vide duck breast, Jemima. Jemima was cooked sous vide for 2 hours at 76 °C. I chilled Jemima in the refrigerator and then removed Jemima from the vacuum bag and dried Jemima’s surfaces with kitchen towel. I heated up a frypan so it was smoking hot and seared Jemima all over. I then sliced Jemima with my Dick™ butchers knife and ate Jemima with some oven roasted Kale sprouts which I’d doused with rice bran oil and iodised salt before exposing to 200 °C dry heat for 15 minutes. Jemima was delicious. Have a good one.

Spring has sprung

spring has sprung

Spring has sprung and it’s a day of mixed feelings. Summer is closer, so that is good. It’s Father’s Day and my daughters have sent me messages so that’s good. I have ManFlu this week so that’s not good. It hasn’t been anything terribly different from other episodes. The main concern about my ManFlu has been the constant barking coughing and creating an unsightly spectacle as I expectorate tenacious mucopurulent phlegm. I hate spring which I’ll explain later in this post.
