Last minute panic

Have you ever experienced last-minute panic? On Monday morning I had a flight at 06:20 AEST from Canberra to Sydney. I realised at 04:00 AEST that I needed to go to the airport via my desk at work because I’d forgotten something on Sunday afternoon.

Last minute panic

I really don’t like that sphincter clenching last-minute panic when I suddenly realise that I’ve forgotten something and I have very little time to rectify the problem.

Sydney

I went into work on Sunday to finish off a couple of presentations I had on Monday and Tuesday in Sydney. I’d refined the text and had run through each presentation a few times. I like to practice a presentation by standing up and reading out the words rather than sitting and reading through a presentation and not making any noise. The only compromise is to stand and mouth the words. Yea, I know, I’m weird like that. I don’t really get nervous about standing up and speaking in front of people, but I do like to be prepared and have the words clear in my head before doing the presentation.

I’m in awe of people who can have someone else prepare a speech for them and then just read it out for the first time when they’re at the event.

Civilian Military cooperation

Anyway, on Monday I was participating in an international session on global civilian-military cooperation in the context of health security. I was speaking with others who all work in either an international uniformed defence force or in a defence agency. I really had a good time. At the end of the session, as is the way when doing things with defence people, especially defence people from the USA, I was given a memento to remember the event.

Drug-resistant sexually transmitted infections

On Tuesday, I participated in a workshop on antimicrobial resistance and sexually transmissible infections. I really enjoyed this session because I got a good amount of continuing professional development from it. I listened intently to presenters sharing their research data on managing patients with drug-resistant infections caused by Mycoplasma genitalium. I also comprehended for the first time the future enormity of not being able to easily treat throat gonorrhoea. I think the best part of the workshop was when someone flashed up a photograph of someone who I regard as the most capable gonococcologist, the late John Tapsall, AM. John was an amazing mentor and friend to me in my professional career before he died as a result of prostate carcinoma.

Melbourne

I had another last minute panic session on Friday when I was at the airport at 05:00 AEST preparing for a flight to Melbourne and not being able to log into my Microsoft OneDrive account where my meeting papers were filed.

It’s been a busy and enjoyable week being in Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. I really love my job.

What have I watched this week?

Stargate SG-1

Cor-ai Season 1 Episode 15

SG-1 is captured by Cartago.

Jackson: You know, I wish you wouldn’t say “harvest.” We’re talking about human beings, not Brussel sprouts.

Farscape

DNA Mad Scientist

Pilot has to give up an arm. Yes, an arm.

Masterchef Australia

Because I was flying around a bit this week with a couple of last-minute panic incidents, I didn’t really get into Masterchef Australia this week. I know Sandeep was eliminated. Sandeep wasn’t one of my favourites so I’m not too upset. So far the three Queensland contestants, viz., Tessa, Nicole, and Christina, are still in the running and in the top ten.

Queenslander

It would be great if they were in the final two shows of the year and if one of them was crowned Masterchef 2019.

Star Trek The Original Series

Sadly, no TOS this week.

Star Trek The Animated Series

Sadly, no TAS this week.

Star Trek: Deep Space 9

A time to stand

The war with the Jem’Hadar is not going well. The best part of this episode is the USS Defiant and Jadzia Dax. At least Dax and Worf get some time together for some intimate action.

National Rugby League

This week was a bye for all teams with quite a few test matches being played.

Women’s State of Origin

On Friday night, the NRL Women’s competition staged their State of Origin game and unfortunately, after a righteous first half, the Queensland team succumbed to New South Wales in the second half.

The Greatest Game of All

I still reckon the Women’s Origin should be played on the same night as game 2 of the Men’s Origin. Each year should alternate with one raising the curtain for the other. The women’s game is slightly shorter with 30-minute halves but other than that it’s the same high speed, hard-hitting, frenetically paced game. It is really tremendous rugby league and demonstrates further why apart from water polo, rugby league is the greatest team sport played on earth. It’s better than soccer, better than aussie rules football, better than the North American codes of football, and better than rugby (union football). If you disagree with me, feel free to leave a comment and have a go.

Men’s State of Origin

Tonight is game 2 of men’s Origin and it’s being played in Perth. Why does the NRL hierarchy think Perth is a suitable place to play the greatest game of all? I mean they love rugby (union football) and aussie rules football in Perth. Rugby league isn’t a big game there.

I hope Queensland (aka the Mighty XXXX Maroons) defeat ¿New South Wales¿ tonight. If they do, then the 2019 series is ours. If they don’t then the deciding match will be played in Sydney in a couple of weeks. That would be a very tough match played in opposition territory and with a hostile crowd. Let’s hope there’s no last-minute panic in the Queensland camp tonight.

Footy food

For tonight’s game I’m making a pork and chicken mozzarella cheese burrito.

LAW & ORDER

Ain’t no love

We say goodbye to ADA Serena Southerlyn (played by Elisabeth Röhm) who is terminated (not with extreme prejudice) by DA Branch because she’s too soft on defendants. I like Branch. I never warmed to Serena Southerlyn. I reckon Branch and ADA Carmichael (played by Angie Harmon) would have got on well together.

What have I listened to this week?

No Such Thing as a Fish

Episode 274: No such thing as a polite baby

Anna really is one of the funniest people. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think it would be worth listening to this podcast. That said, Andy is also pretty funny with a fairly dry sense of humour. Even though Dan is Australian, his presence isn’t essential. James though is important because I understand he is responsible for the editing and production of the show.

If you really want to listen to a funny and informative podcast, you can’t go past No Such Thing as a Fish.

The Medical Republic Podcast

Felicity is currently in London and Francine hosted a bonus show which highlights a story of a general practice registrar who has done part of his training in Antarctica. Have a listen if you’re interested in spending some time working in Antarctica. I imagine there’d be some last minute panic incidents for people embarking on a trip to, or as people leave for deployment to Antarctica.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

I’m eating more yoghurt

Yummy Lummy this week

I made a cake! Who said Yummy Lummy doesn’t bake cakes? To be fair, this was a kale and silverbeet layer cake.
