Another trip around the sun

This week I hit another milestone. Last year I started planning what I might do this year. It sort of depended on the health of my parents. If it were likely, I’d need to be close to them at this time I was thinking of a week in Brisbane. Otherwise, I was thinking of flying to Melbourne, renting a car, and driving across the Nullarbor to Perth. I’ve never done a long drive like that, and I’ve always wanted to give it a go.

I had thought about renting a Ford Mustang with a 5 L V8. I wasn’t sure if I’d go alone or do it with someone.

I may just have to do this later in the year or perhaps next year. At some stage I want to do it. I like a road trip.

Family and friends

I’m grateful to family and friends who sent me messages wishing me a happy birthday. It’s a bit weird celebrating a birthday and being physically distant to people.

Farty

Tonight I’m having a virtual party with my daughters using Apple FaceTime. My daughters have dubbed it a Farty or FaceTime Party.

I think I’ll have a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie and then some cheesecake (with a candle) for the Farty.

The heater has been used

In Canberra, there’s a general rule, no matter how cold it gets, no heater shall be turned on before Anzac Day nor after the first Tuesday of November. These two days represent major events in Australia. Most people have heard of or read about Anzac Day. I expect not that many people are aware that Victorians take a day off work and school for a horse race which is held on the first Tuesday of November.

Friday was a cold one across the south-east of Australia and I turned on a heater for the first time. It’ll now be in regular use until at least October.

Influenza immunisation

On my birthday, I was immunised against influenza. It’s really important to maintain every effort to reduce burden on healthcare at the moment so influenza immunisation is a wise choice.

What have I watched this week?

Master Chef

I’ve been enjoying Master Chef this year. The contestants all have interesting personalities and the judges are growing on me. I’ve chosen my favourites and it will be fascinating to see how they fair in the competition.

Chef

Chef is a movie I really enjoy watching a few times every year. It’s just a good story about a chef who gets a bad review and then opens a food truck.

Thor: Ragnarok

I really like this Thor movie. It’s funny and has some great acting with lots of Australian and New Zealand talent.

What have I listened to last week?

Last week I mentioned I watched a Judith Lucy special on Amazon Prime. During the week I downloaded a podcast series Judith Lucy had recently completed. It’s titled: Judith Lucy: Overwhelmed and dying.

If you like the sort of deadpan blunt humour Judith Lucy is known for, give it a go. I think she really funny.

What have I eaten this week?

This is a gallery of food photographs. Click on one and scroll through the rest.

Yummy Lummy

Last night I posted a recipe for a Thai red curry cauliflower soup.

It’s a quick, easy and very tasty soup you can make on a weeknight after a day at work.

Random Yummy

Today I made a really nice sandwich inspired by a friend (thanks GC).

I made a Pan-fried mayonnaise browned sourdough sandwich with pâté, blue cheese and tomato, with further lubrication from Lurpak butter while participating in teleconferences today.

Final thoughts

  • Do you plan what you’re going to do on a birthday?
  • Have you been involved in any virtual parties to celebrate something?
  • Have you been watching more live streaming media during the COVID-19 pandemic?

  1. A very happy birthday to you Gary albeit belated. I love the look of your soups (without the steak of course) and your birthday cheesecake looks so lovely.

    1. Thanks, Sue, it was a good few days of celebrating. I’ve paid for it with a loss of weight momentum but that’s okay. The soups have been great. There may be a pea soup coming soon 😃

  2. Happy happy Birthday!! I used to have what I coined ‘long distance birthday parties’ for friends or even my sister. Although, then, I had to use a camera with film and take photos. After they were developed, I’d stuff them in a card everyone at the party signed. I think a Farty would be easier!!!
I love you got lollipops for your shots. When the eldest was 12, the school nurse bribed the kids that needed them with full size candy bars! The eldest was mad I had made sure he was up to date.
Ragnarok is one of my very favorite Marvel movies, next to Avengers.
Now, it is barely after 8 pm and I am going to get a half cup of an ice cream treat for persons with Diabetes. Because it was your birthday!!

    1. My eldest, the 30 year old, thought a Farty was hilarious! And my vanilla ice cream was splendid with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a few chocolate chips. (it is low carb, but not to much with the chocolate chips!)

  3. Once again, Happy Birthday Gaz! 😀 Pity you couldn’t do something extravagant on your birthday this year. As you said, maybe you could go for a long road trip later this year. Or do something wild like good food all day 😀

I’ve been streaming YouTube more during this pandemic – maybe a bit too much and it can get me hyped up all day, and not ideal when I want some rest.

Looks like you’re still eating good 😀

    1. Thanks, Mabel. I’ve been eating well so I’m happy. Yep, I will do something special when this pandemic is over.

    2. Keep eating well, Gaz. Hopefully you can do all of the special things you mentioned – and go someplace warm 😃

    3. Thanks, Mabel. Once the pandemic is over and everyone at work has sorted out leave arrangements I’ll be happy to have some down time.
