New CPAP machine

This week I took delivery of a new CPAP machine. I’ve had my original CPAP machine for seven years and it’s been kept running on gaff tape.

I’ve snored loudly for as long as I can remember. There have been times when I’ve woken myself up because of how loud my snoring is. As you’d expect, anyone in close proximity cannot help but notice my snoring.

Soon after moving to Canberra, the first spring informed me physically that Canberra is possibly the worst place in the world to live if you suffer from allergic rhinitis (hay fever), I started to wonder if I had sleep apnœa. I was experiencing extreme tiredness and exhaustion, I was falling asleep during the day, I couldn’t think straight, I felt like I had brain fog, and I felt like I never got a good night’s sleep.

I’d also started measuring my own blood pressure and noted it was elevated. I went to see a GP and along with medication for hypertension, I was referred to a respiratory physician for a sleep study.

The sleep study didn’t reveal sleep apnœa, that is, no periods of apnœa of more than ten seconds, however, the study revealed a problem with multiple hypopnœas. In that one evening, there was a record of more than thirty episodes of irregular breathing with apnœa for up to ten seconds. So while I technically do not have sleep apnœa, the respiratory physician recommended I try a CPAP machine.

CPAP machines work by supplying a continuous stream of air under positive pressure through the nose to artificially force air into the lungs. In doing so, it maintains a patent airway and inhibits snoring and ensures regular apnœa-free breathing through the night.

My first CPAP machine was about the size of a large shoebox. Half of it was the water bath so the machine can heat water and use humidified air in the tubing.

Over seven years, the machine has performed well but the tubing has sprung leaks and the water tank has oxidised severely. I’m using gaff tape to cover holes and help with the tube joins.

The new CPAP machine is smaller and lighter. It’s more compact. It also has an inbuilt sim card which collects my personal private information and provides me with feedback each morning on the nature of my sleep, the mask seal quality, and any sleep episodes.

The automatic ramping of pressure and humidification of air works really well and so far I’m pretty happy.

It’s not a cheap problem to have though. Rather than fork out for up front purchase and ownership, I’ve elected to make monthly payments over 36 months.

What have I watched this week?

Stargate SG-1

In the line of duty

Captain Carter’s body is invaded by a symbiote and it turns out this symbiote is very different to the rest of Goa’uld.

Star Trek: Deep Space 9

The Magnificent Ferengi

I want to know what syrup of squill tastes like.

National Rugby League

I’m still struggling to come to terms with how the Brisbane Broncos were eliminated from the NRL finals.

What have I listened to this week?

With the release of iOS 13.0 this week, the technology podcasts like Mac OS Ken have been providing useful information on the changes in the operating system for the Apple iPhone range.

I’m using an iPhone 7 Plus at the moment. I noticed with the update to iOS 13.0 that the battery life on this handset has deteriorated significantly.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

  • Do you snore?
  • Have you tried CPAP?
  • Are you an Apple iPhone user? Have you updated to iOS 13.0?

  1. I have never heard about this machine before Gary, but sent a link to your blog for a family member, as might be interested to try this one.
