Dirty Harry

This week has been notable for a Dirty Harry rewatch. One of the great things about living in the 21st century is live streaming television (TV). On iTunes I can rent a movie for under $AUD5 without having to put shoes on, put clothes on, and drive to a video/DVD shop.

Dirty Harry

I was in grade one when the first Dirty Harry movie was released in 1971. I can’t remember when I first saw it. It would have been on TV, I would have been a youngish teenager, and it would have been rated AO for Adults Only.

I’m pretty sure the gun play, the cynical nature of Inspector Harry Callahan, the blood and guts, and the San Francisco car chase scenes would have been the main features that attracted a young me to watch the movie Dirty Harry (1971). I’m pretty sure, even with a late night time slot and the AO rating, the swearing would have been masked out.

What have I watched this week?

Dirty Harry film series

So this week I watched all five Dirty Harry movies. My Monday through to Friday viewing consisted of:
Monday Dirty Harry 1971
Tuesday Magnum Force 1973
Wednesday The Enforcer 1976
Thursday Sudden Impact 1983
Friday Dead Pool 1988

Apparently Sudden Impact and Dead Pool were not hits at the box office, and fans mostly prefer the first three movies.

For me, I’d say the first three movies were better, but I really enjoyed the darkness of Sudden Impact. I thought Sondra Locke’s character (Jennifer Spencer) was amazing.

The film series is notable for classic one line quotes/catch phrases from Harry:
Dirty Harry “You’ve got to ask yourself a question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk?”
Magnum Force “A man’s got to know his limitations”
Sudden Impact “Go ahead, make my day”

I’ve been a long time Clint Eastwood fan and apart from one movie which I think most fans agree was more an exploration of romantic drama, I’ve enjoyed the westerns, the war movies, cop movies, and I especially liked Gran Torino.

Starship Troopers and Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation

Last night rather than watch the AFL grand final and one of the NRL semi final games, I had a hankering for some whacky science fiction.

I’ve seen some of the Starship Troopers movies before and thought I’d start a rewatch.

I really don’t know what to make of these movies. Humans are pitted against alien entities which have eight legs and are colloquially regarded as arachnids and incorrectly described as bugs.

A pet peeve of mine is when the term bug is used to describe anything other than an insect. Spiders, ticks, and mites are arachnids. Bacteria are procaryotic single-celled entities and not bugs.

The acting is a bit corny but the violence is epic and I suppose that is what sucks me in. In addition, it’s set in the future and there are starships as well as futuristic infantry soldiers and equipment. I mean, who wouldn’t get a thrill from watching Michael Ironside have both legs bitten off at the upper thighs and telling his subordinate to kill him because it’s the right thing to do.

Typical of some science fiction, there’s some weird supernatural phenomena in the form of enhanced psychological powers amongst some humans.

I’m looking forward to watching Starship Troopers 3: Marauder because it features Jolene Blalock who played one of my favourite Vulcans, viz., T’Pol from Star Trek: Enterprise.

National Rugby League

Less said the better. I have now lost interest in the NRL grand final next week. I could less less who wins.

What have I listened to this week?

Meet the Microbiologist

A great show from Julie Wolf and the American Society for Microbiology Influenza Virus Evolution with Jesse Bloom. This is so relevant for people to hear right now.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

Videos

Photographs

I’m back to walking every morning so there are more photographs of the Belconnen Owl Statue.

This is a gallery of photographs. Click on one image and scroll through the rest of them.

Yummy Lummy this week

I posted about cooking salmon in a bag as opposed to the previous week’s post which was ling in a bag.

I also posted a longer video yesterday after I ate a lamb kebab from Belco Halal Kebabs & Pizzeria. It was huge. If you live in the Belconnen town centre, I would recommend the value for money of the kebabs. Twelve Australian dollars gets you a lot of tasty meat.

The cookbook

I converted a couple of posts this week to text files. I didn’t do much more than that.

Final thoughts

  • Do you remember renting VHS or β (Betamax) cassettes or DVDs?
  • Do you like Clint Eastwood movies? What’s your favourite Clint Eastwood movie?
  • Have you watched any of the Starship Troopers movies?

  1. I am not a NRL follower but I was happy that the Raiders won into the Grand Final.

    1. I can remember the era of Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley, Bradley Clyde etc. Green Milkshakes was the thing then.

    2. If Mal was playing I’d be happy.
Now it’s green bread and green burger patties.
