Kale sprouts are back

Kale sprouts are back and I’m happy

Last year I came across kale sprouts or as Coles like to name them “kalettes”. A friend Rachael who lives in Adelaide loves them too. I really like them cooked in the oven with a coating of a little oil and iodised salt. They come out nice and crispy.

Rache and I have been lamenting the lack of kale sprouts this year and we’d assumed it was a function of bush fires and then the COVID-19 pandemic.

I was so excited I bought two packets. I’ll probably have some tonight with some leftover curry I made yesterday.

Impromptu birthday party

A highlight from this week was an impromptu birthday party at work. I love my workmates.

What have I watched this week?

Tiger King

I watched another couple of episodes. I can’t believe Joe thought he’d win an election and become governor of his state.

Master Chef

It’s been a relief to watch this most nights and not the news. News about COVID-19 is depressing. It’s good to see some food being cooked and some excitement on the screen.

It was a shock to see Dani go. She was one of my favourites.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

Yummy Lummy this week

Last night I used Mayver’s crunchy dark roast peanut paste to make a slow-cooked chuck steak Thai red curry. It was really nice. I wonder how this curry will taste with kale sprouts.

The best of Random Yummy this week

I cooked a really nice steak this week and enjoyed the spinalis dorsi with some potato mash and baby green peas. I think this meal would have been better with kale sprouts.

Final thoughts

  • Has there been something you were looking forward to this year that hasn’t eventuated?
  • Do you like kale sprouts?
  • How are you coping with the pandemic?

  1. I’ve never eaten kale in any way. I did plant it in an Oregon Coast garden and found the elk absolutely loved it. They, however, were fairly indiscriminate in their tastes. I’d probably try it if you made it, your meals look incredibly delicious.
The only thing I want to do is get north and empty the house and be done. At the moment, the states are moving along rapidly to tourism and travel, but I’m still sick with something. It comes and goes and is very annoying. I did notice petunias are hard to find this year, early in the season people grabbed them up like floating bills in a money booth. By the time I asked for some, they were few and expensive.
I, too, am often depressed by this pandemic. Because here in the US it is as if it is a momentary blip that needs erased asap. I’m afraid it is going to bite us harder and few will care.

    1. Thanks, Kris. I do worry that if the USA doesn’t heed the expert medical advice it could get a lot worse for you all.

    2. They won’t and it will. I sometimes think if I do get north, I may not be able to return!!! And I’d much rather be here, the working sewer is a huge plus.

    3. At the moment…they depend on tourism and tourists are usually not the nicest bunch of folks.

  2. I had a bike ride booked, Tour de Vines in the mountain region of Victoria, Beechworth to Bright. A group of six of us were going for four days but unfortunately we had to cancel. We are hoping to do it in Spring when things might be brighter.
I haven’t tried kale sprouts. My dad used to live in the highlands of Scotland and kale was what they fed to the cattle.
I am coping with the pandemic but I guess it is easier for me as I am retired so am used to being at home. I do miss the physical contact with my family but we are managing with Facetime and Whats app.

    1. Thanks, Heather. I hope things will be more relaxed in Spring so you can do the tour in Victoria. I’ve enjoyed nice vanilla slices in Beechworth and Bright.

    2. I will admit that eating and drinking was going to be a large part of our bike riding activity.

    1. The kale sprouts are so good with a little oil and salt and in the oven. They come out crispy and delicious.
