Winter getaway

I’m typing this week’s diary post from Brisbane. I’m here spending some time with my parents.

While I’m here to help them out it’s also a good way of thawing out from the cold of Canberra. On the Friday before I left, it was a –5.2 °C/22.6 °F morning. I felt validated for making plans for a Winter getaway from Canberra, albeit it’s only for a few days.

Why would someone put me on PETA’s mailing list?

Why would someone put me on PETA’s mailing list?

It’s been a short week yet I feel exhausted. Every morning this week I’ve been wide awake between 2 and 3 am. I usually roll out of bed at about 4.20 am so I can cook breakfast, shower, shave and everything else, and be out the door in time to arrive at work at 6.30.

The ceremonial birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II

It’s a long weekend and my “out of office” message mentions that in the Australian Capital Territory, the local government, is observing the ceremonial birthday of Her Majesty, Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II. Which means by extension it’s a public holiday in Canberra even if we don’t work for the ACT Government.

While I’m not a monarchist, I wish the Queen of the Commonwealth all the best.

Tidying up my Instagram accounts

Friday lunch. Chicken parmigiana from the Canberra Hospital and Health Services tuck shop.
I'm still surprised there is no graffiti yet. I hope the chairs are fixed and some trees are planted for shade to help prevent skin carcinoma.

Tidying up my Instagram accounts

Are you on Instagram? For a long time it was my favourite app, but like a lot of social media platforms, my interest and activity waxes and wanes. The main social media platforms for me are Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and to a lesser degree Pinterest. I also like staying in touch with people with Messenger and WhatsApp.

I think it’s marvellous how I can be in a Slack chatroom with podcasters from across the Pacific Ocean. Chat with cooks in the UK in a Facebook group. Share tweets with friends from all around the world.

G’day readers. I hope you’re all well. Have you had a good week? It’s been a little bracing in Canberra this week. The morning minimum temperatures have been dipping below 0 °C/32 °F and there has been a little frost on the ground. People who leave their cars outside have found ice on their windscreens (windshields for North American readers).

More circuits around the Sun

The ugliness of abandoned buildings contrasting with Autumn colours in Woden, Canberra.

More circuits around the Sun

Where did the trees go?

One day this week I was admiring the Autumn colours of the trees in front of the decrepit abandoned buildings (Alexander and Albemarle) in Woden. I go away for a day and return to discover them removed. Now all I can see are the ugly eyesores of Woden.
