The future is bright

The future is bright

Yes, the future is bright. I had a really enjoyable week. While life isn’t perfect, there are ups and downs, swings and roundabouts; you need to make the most of what you have.

It’s been a good week. I’ve attended meetings and presentations that have been really thought provoking. I’ve heard stories about events from a decade ago with lessons for today. I’ve heard presentations from people doing work that will help humankind into the future.

I’ve also enjoyed the fellowship of friends. It’s been good catching up and eating good food.

I’ve been so busy this weekend I haven’t even cooked. I had to pull out a bottom drawer post for Yummy Lummy this week. It’s good to have some things laying around just in case.

Babylon 5

I’ve been enjoying watching Babylon 5 after a recommendation from some friends on Twitter. Given how old the series is, it’s a bit quirky, a bit like a soap opera, but it’s a fun science fiction TV series.

Regular readers know I love Star trek, and I like Star Wars and Firefly. Babylon 5 is a show I can see myself rewatching and bingeing on like I do with all the Star Trek series.

Like all TV series made in that era, there are some very funny scenes which when viewed in light of today’s politically correct overlay can be both cringeworthy and hilarious.

Take for example this clip. It’s from Season 2 Episode 12 Acts of sacrifice (first aired in the US in February 1995). Earthers (people who originated from the planet Earth) want to build alliances with alien species. The Lumati believe they are a superior species and before any alliance can be made with an inferior species like Earthers, an assessment by a high ranking official is required. The task of handling the diplomatic niceties falls on Babylon 5’s second in command, viz., Commander Ivanova (an Earther of Russian heritage). Diplomacy isn’t her strong suit. After an extensive tour of Babylon 5, she manages to impress the Lumati official who condescendingly agrees to an alliance. The agreement needs to be sealed in the Lumati tradition and that is with sexual congress. Repulsed at the thought of intimate contact with the Lumati, Commander Ivanova devises a plan. She agrees to the Lumati proposal but only if they seal the deal “Earth-style”.

The notion of sealing a contract with intimate contact isn’t new. I was listening to episode 226 of No Such Thing as a Fish which dropped yesterday and James raised the point that in the 13th and 14th century, contracts were sealed with a kiss.

I don’t know of a streaming service that carries Babylon 5 in Australia. I’ve been paying for each season on iTunes. I understand in the USA, Babylon 5 is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Flashbacks

My friend, Professor Len Notaras, AM, sent me this photograph. It’s from October 2005. I have hair. The subject of the photograph is His Excellency Kim Christian Beazley, AC. The Honourable Mr Beazley, at the time, was visiting the Royal Darwin Hospital.

  1. I think the future is looking good as is the present Gary. I love seeing what you cook/eat every week….interesting to see what others eat isn’t it.

    1. Thank you very much Sue, I like to stay optimistic. I definitely enjoy seeing what others prepare and eat, especially in restaurants 😃😃😃

  2. I actually have a pessimistic view for the future. Have a feeling there might be some big event that will change the course of how we all live in this world at some point, maybe not for the better. But doesn’t mean we can’t keep trying.

That is really a nice photo of you and everyone else. Very nice to be recognised for the work that you do.

Didn’t manage to get McNugs today. Well, there’s always next week.

    1. My lunch today was enormous. I hard charcuterie duck breast, goose terrine, and duck liver pâté, then scallops, plus slowly cooked beef cheeks and a scotch fillet steak with pepper sauce served with roasted sweet potato. The dessert was an Eton mess.

    2. I push pessimistic thoughts away. There’s nothing I can do, so I try to focus on the positives and make the most of them.

    3. That is quite a lot of meat. Bird, seafood, beef meats 😂 If you had lamb and chicken you’d have eaten all the meat food groups. A good treat

Focus on positives and hope for the best.

    4. It was amazing. When things don’t go my way, I think of good things like the that meal and chatting with friends like you on blogs.

    5. Chatting with friends whether online or in real life can make a big difference. Not only does it distract you from your problems but you learn another view on things 😀

  3. Gary, you can’t be in that photo. There are ladies and old men in it.
That is an interesting chocolate. Rocks and wood….
And yes, sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is sunshine and not a train.

    1. Haha, some old friends in that photograph 😃
The chocolate is made by friends in Canberra. They make chocolate from bean to bar. They import the beans from overseas and make the chocolate in their garage.

    2. OOOOH! Garage chocolate. Some of the most amazing things started in garages. Harley Davidson, Disney, most computer companies, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

    3. I live in an apartment block, I miss having a garage to muck around in.
