First time on a Canberra bus

First time on a Canberra bus

This week I did something for the first time. I caught a Canberra bus!

Apart from catching a bus to and from The Ekka in Brisbane, I’ve not caught a bus for work or education purposes since being in Brisbane as a schoolboy.

On Thursday, I had to attend a meeting near the city centre and I had arranged with some work colleagues to catch a taxicab. However, about 45 minutes prior to leaving work for the meeting a colleague mentioned he had to walk his daughter to the local bus interchange and he wanted to catch a bus to the meeting and would I mind catching a bus. I had no objection, so I went along.

From what I’ve seen on the roads of Canberra, its buses aren’t special when compared with any other local government bus service. The fare I was charged seemed steep for a one-way trip. However, I was also able to sit rather than stand. The passenger I sat next to had a particularly strong odour so I was happy to alight from the bus and attend the meeting.

Will I catch more Canberra buses? I’m not sure. I own a car and Canberra was designed in a way to create space between town centres. This means while it is the size of a large country town, the best way to get around to various business and residential centres is via private car.

That said, I have no desire to ever go anywhere like Tuggeranong or Gungahlin so it probably makes sense to just travel from Belconnen to Civic. I live in an easy walking distance of the Belconnen bus exchange so visits to the Canberra Apple Store may be by Canberra bus.

I wonder if it’s cost effective to get a “MyWay Card“? The cost of parking in Civic is significant, so I may as well get a bus pass.

What else has been happening?

It’s been a great week. I’ve been really busy with a lot of different meetings to participate in. The one downside was not doing my clinical day on Friday. Instead, I attended a meeting on Friday.

Another downside of the week has been a lack of motivation to get out and shoot photographs while being outside. I know there was a lunar event but I didn’t feel like going out in the subzero weather and looking at an orange disc in the night sky.

Full moon

I remember being an intern and working in the emergency department doing a lot of evenings and nights. People would talk about the full moon being special because the department would get busy with people who thought the full moon affected their health.

I think it is one of those confirmation bias sorts of things. People would remember certain patients on full moon nights when really; similar patients would present on most other nights.

The placement of the earth, moon and sun, certainly has an effect on our weather and other gravity dependent parameters like tides. But can a full moon really make people feel differently? I don’t know. I find it difficult to believe. I’m happy to be proved wrong with some objective scientific evidence.

I reckon people who easily succumb to unconventional ideas and pseudoscience probably work themselves up to feeling bad on a full moon evening rather than the position of the earth, moon and sun having any discernible impact on their health and wellbeing. I concede though, that people who work themselves up into a ‘state’ because of a full moon, do have a full moon problem and they should probably seek some help.

What have I eaten this week?

Final thoughts

How has your week been?
Do you believe the full moon affects your health and well being?
Do you like riding the bus?

These are “My thoughts and stuff”, so if you disagree, feel free to let me know. Constructive and positive criticism is always welcome.

Why would someone put me on PETA’s mailing list?

  1. I am like you Garry, I have only caught the bus once along Northbourne Avenue to go into the city…and I have been in Canberra for over thirteen years.

  2. I’ve got a fascination with astrology, space, galaxies and the universe beyond., and do believe in full moon and the crazy effect. At some places I’ve worked, when there’s a full moon it’s one bad thing after another at work for the whole team. That said, I do agree with you other days can just be as bad.

Here in Melbourne buses don’t always come on time. Some times the bus doesn’t even show up.

    1. I think as a curmudgeon in training, I need to catch the bus more. Perhaps when there is a full moon to watch how the the people of Canberra behave 😂

    2. Hopefully if you catch the bus more, it doesn’t frustrate you. Hopefully there will be a blood moon in the warmer months and we can both go out and see if we can get some shots 😂

    3. Haha, I’m anxiously waiting for warmer weather to get out and about with my camera.
