Ending a week on a high note

It’s been a busy week. Lots to do and not enough time. There have also been highs and lows in terms of atmospheric temperature in Canberra. It got >30 °C one day and on Thursday morning it was <5 °C. I’ve worn shorts and a T-shirt some nights and a jumper on others. Such is life in Canberra. Tuesday saw the running of a horse race which usually marks the beginning of tomato growing season in Canberra because it’s said there will be no more frosts after the first Tuesday in November.

The horse race, that is, the Melbourne Cup, erm, sorry, The Lexus Melbourne Cup is an annual event when jockeys sit on racehorses and ride them around a track counter-clockwise. The winner gets paid a lot of money and the real losers are the horses who are shot with a bolt because a bone broke or some other injury occurred making it uneconomical to keep the animal alive. I’m guessing the horses which are killed are female horses and male horses which have been castrated. I assume if an injury to a female horse isn’t too bad, it may be kept alive for breeding, but it cost a lot of money to keep a horse alive. I’m also assuming a good horse with testicles might be kept alive for siring purposes. If I’m wrong please let me know.

I think the real beauty in horses is watching then run and gallop sans jockey. I like slow motion gait movies as much as I love slow-motion movies of the plumes from nuclear weapon detonations. They are majestic and beautiful. I could watch them all day.

My week ended on flying to Brisbane and visiting my daughters and parents. I also got to sleep in a new bed. Since leaving Brisbane, more than 20 years ago, whenever I visit my parents, I’d sleep in my childhood bed. It was not the most comfortable bed. It had the same mattress I had as a child. It had posts that were hip high and I’ve had countless bruises from bumping into the knobs on the posts. That bed has now been taken by a niece and replaced with a new ensemble single bed. It’s a joy to sleep in.

I enjoyed a pineaple fritter, potato scallops, battered cod, and crumbed calamari from Sandgate Fishmonger again. It was all really good.

What have I watched this week?

Not much really. After watching the news while I eat dinner, I’ve turned the TV off and caught up on some reading and then gone to bed to listen to podcasts.

What have I listened to this week?

Nothing out of the ordinary really. Just the regular photography, technology, science fiction, and comedy podcasts. I’ve also started listening to “The Audiobook of the Year 2018” by the elves who do the “No Such Thing as a Fish” podcast.

What have I eaten and done this week?

This is a gallery of photographs. Click on one image and scroll through the rest of them.

You’ll see some nice photographs from my weekend in Brisbane. There’s a couple of shots from this morning’s breakfast. Ms21 cooked breakfast for her sisters, my parents, her oldest sister’s BF, and me. Gee, I had a good time at Ms21’s place and being with her as she prepared breakfast for us. It included waffles, butterscotch sauce, whipped cream, fruit, bacon, mushrooms, spinach, and fried eggs.

Yummy Lummy this week

I didn’t manage to cook anything to share a recipe post. Instead, I did a quick restaurant review.

I also wrote a review for Google Maps.

Final thoughts

  • How do you feel about horse racing?
  • What did you get up to this week?
  • Do you like Sunday breakfast with family?

A week in Brisbane

  1. I have mixed feelings about horse racing. On one had, why not because it’s a sport, and I’m not against betting. Then again, it is sad to see horses go out this way and it’s hard to see better regulation to stop such incidents from happening.

New bed up in Brisbane for you. New bed 😀

I generally like spending Sunday with a sleep in and quiet time, quiet time which is so important to me.

    1. Likewise Mabel. I don’t have anything against people having a bet. It’s like alcohol, I don’t mind people drinking. But it’s just some people who have addiction problems that we need to help. The horse racing though, the horses are such beautiful creatures.

The new bed was great. I hope to spend a week in Brisbane soon so I will enjoy it more.

    1. It was indeed Sue. It was the first time she’s made a big breakfast that I’ve enjoyed. It was wonderful.

    1. No, you didn’t miss anything. It is a random photograph from the week. That particular stink bug is an imported pest.
