Feeling crook

Feeling crook

No, I’m not feeling crook. I’m finally feeling a bit better after an extended head cold and upper respiratory tract infection. No, I’m back to thinking about language again.

This week, a friend was unwell. I thought I’d send a get well message. I started typing…”I heard you’re feeling a little crook, I hope you feel better soon.” I looked at what I wrote and thought, “Hmmm…in this day and age, I need to more clear with what I write in a text message.”

I mean someone not familiar with colloquial Australian English usage may have thought I had written that I had heard my friend was having a feel of a thief!

Yea, I don’t have much to write about this week. It’s been a quiet one.

I’m still walking every morning but I’ve noticed I’m also eating more. My Saturday afternoon sous vide sessions have been going well but I think I need to start cooking smaller portions of meat and freezing some portions rather than eating a full chicken maryland piece with a meal. I think a small thigh is more than enough if I couple it with a salad. I’ve seen that some people regularly freeze sous vide cooked meat and it doesn’t take too much effort to thaw the meat and reheat it for meals later.

Valentine’s day

Do you celebrate or observe or participate in Valentine’s Day? As an old bloke who lives alone, this is a day that passes me by. I like that in Australia, people give out condoms. I like that sort of twist on what is something which is clearly exploited by commercial entities and trying to take advantage of the intellectually challenged.

Okay, maybe that was cruel. Perhaps even rude and arrogant of me. These people may not be intellectually challenged, but perhaps suckered into an expensive scam. I mean, I don’t want florists to go out of business but all the other palaver just irks me.

In an attempt at humour and playing on the first letters of Valentine’s Day I wore my syphilis necktie to work. There were some nice comments on Facebook and Instagram.

What have I watched this week?

Grand Tour

I know that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are not everyone’s cup of tea. Since leaving Top Gear, I’ve enjoyed watching The Grand Tour. Season Three has started well.

Russian Doll

My TV watching mentor, Kate, has recommended Russian Doll. I’ve watched the first three episodes and so far so good. If you like Natasha Lyonne from American Pie and Orange is the New Black, you’ll love Russian Doll.

Star Trek: Discovery

This week’s episode, Saints of Imperfection, was a roller coaster. It was Star Trek as Star Trek should always be. If I can’t have Gabrielle Lorca, give me Phillipa Georgiou. She’s fantastic. The only downside is the Dr Hugh Culber has been resurrected. It was always tough to differentiate between Bashir and Pulaski as my least favourite Star Trek doctor. Culber makes it easy. He’s an annoying twit. Give me Beverly Crusher and Phlox any day.

What have I listened to this week?

Special Sauce podcast

The Special Sauce Podcast is very USA-centric but the stories are really good to listen too. The host is a well known food writer, viz., Ed Levine, and he has a really good interviewing style. Give it a go if you’re interested.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

This is a gallery of photographs. Click on one image and scroll through the rest of them.

I was quite chuffed when someone I follow on Instagram made a nice comment about the photograph of the KFC thighs I enjoyed on Friday night.

Yummy Lummy this week

I’m going to be busy for a few weeks so I thought I would do some compilation style posts.

This week I’m writing about using leftover sous vide meat with instant noodles and coconut cream.

Leftover sous vide meat, instant noodles, and coconut cream. A generic recipe that can be used with any meat, any noodles, but you need the coconut cream.

Final thoughts

  • Have you ever felt a little crook? How did the thief react?
  • What do you think about Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May?
  • Do you think KFC can be made to look good?

  1. I think we’ve all been there feeling crook. The other day I was catching up with a friend who was 100% crook and I thought I’d be I’ll too but didn’t seem to have happened.

KFC looks good all the time.

  2. I’m going to keep watching Discovery because it isn’t terrible, and I do generally enjoy it. But, bringing back Hugh really cheapened what happened in the first season.

    1. I agree. I mean having a strong character as a medical officer on the ship is important for any Star Trek series, but his character is dead and he should remain dead. It’s time to move on.
