Jet lag, what jet lag?

Jet lag, what jet lag?

I got back from a week in Québec City last Sunday afternoon. A remarkable thing, I haven’t experienced any significant jet lag. I’ve been sleeping okay and during the day I haven’t been feeling overly tired.

Me on Saturday night

I put it down to managing to get about six hours sleep from what would have been 10 pm Saturday night Canberra time. I stayed awake all Sunday and went to sleep at the usual time, i.e., about 8.30 pm.

It’s been a good week otherwise. I didn’t get a chance to do a bulk sous vide cook on Sunday afternoon so this week was mainly roasting meats in my toaster oven and getting the internal temperature correct with my MEATER wireless meat thermometer.

I’ve also managed to get out and walk for forty minutes each morning. My weight did’t get out of control while I was in Melbourne and then Québec City. I managed to keep to about 85 kilograms. Not the greatest weight but given I enjoyed eating whatever I was exposed to, it wasn’t too bad.

Canberra Day

This weekend is a long weekend for the residents of the Australian Capital Territory. Canberra was officially named on 12 March 1913. The second weekend of March is now a gazetted long weekend so the residents of Canberra can enjoy a day off and economic production can be inhibited, cafes and coffee joints can charge a public holiday surcharge, and on Tuesday everyone has to catch up on the communications from our colleagues working elsewhere in the country who would have benefited from our being at work on Monday.

National Broadband Network

I received notification that my NBN connection will occur later this month. The good news is that I won’t be paying anything more than I do for ADSL2 and hopefully, I’ll average 40 Mbps download and 15 Mbps upload. On ADSL2 I’m currently downloading at <10 Mbps and uploads rarely exceed 0.5 Mbps. It’s not the fastest plan, but given I won’t be charged anything more and it’s unlimited data, I’m not complaining. I’m hoping I can do YouTube videos again. In the past, when I was doing some YouTube videos and podcast production, I would use my smartphone’s LTE or 4G service. It was faster than hard-wired ADSL2.

What have I watched this week?

Star Trek: Discovery (Spoilers)

Light and Shadows

I missed seeing this episode last week because I was away. Light and Shadows introduces us to Ethan Peck who plays Spock.

In the absence of Mirror Universe Captain Gabrielle Lorca, I think my favourite character is Captain Philippa Georgiou who is now in Section 31. I like her darkness and her boldness. While the current version is from the Mirror Universe (because the Prime Universe version is dead), she is a smart and conniving character with tremendous physical presence. Michelle Yeoh plays Philippa Georgiou so well. Dressed in black leather it is very difficult not to take notice of her every move.

If Memory Serves

This started oddly with flashbacks to “The Cage” which was the pilot episode for The Original Series. For those not familiar with TOS history, The Cage had Christopher Pike as captain of the USS Enterprise, Spock was the science officer, while “Number One” (played by Majel Barrett) was the executive officer (XO). I sort of understand why it was done but the difference in video quality and the different actors may have confused some viewers who never got into TOS.

For well seasoned (read old [like me]) Star Trek fans I can see how this may appeal to some sort of nostalgia. For me though (and I’m sure for others) it was a bit jarring. The producers would be between a rock and a hard place if they reshot the scenes with the current actors and the current technology, but for me it may have been a smoother visual experience to tell the story that Pike had already visited Talos 4.

There are many TOS fans who may not have seen The Cage given it was a pilot which was rejected by the network and it resulted in Gene Roddenberry returning with William Shatner as James Kirk and Spock became XO as well as science officer. Majel Barrett went from being XO to Nurse Chapel. I understand The Cage wasn’t aired on TV in many countries until many years after TOS had been in syndication.

For a nice twist, there is an Australian connection with Melissa George playing Vina. It was also good to see the DISCO Talosians approximated the TOS Talosians reasonably well.

With the Red Angel in the mix, there is talk of timelines. This makes me nervous. I will get into sphincter clenching anxiety if we approach the Jar Jar Abrams timeline of Star Trek. That’s a version of Star Trek I tolerate rather than enjoy.

What have I listened to this week?

The Medical Republic (again)

I mention TMR again because this week’s show mentions the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Pathology Update meeting.

I was at the meeting and listened to the speakers who were interviewed. Please give it a listen.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

Yummy Lummy this week

After a couple of weeks of restaurant reviews, I returned to a recipe. This weekend I used my electric autoclave to quickly cook some lamb forequarter chops along with some leftover chicken-flavoured rice.

Final thoughts

  • Do you suffer badly from jet lag?
  • Do you get sphincter clenching anxiety when something you don’t like may happen?
  • Do you have the NBN yet? Is it worth it? Will 5G be the answer to our Internet of Things dreams?

  1. Never experienced it so I’m going to put it up there with man flu. 2. Yes although not sure I want to bring my sphincter into the proceedings! 3. I’m a foreigner in these here parts so this doesn’t apply.

    1. Ah, manflu, it’s real and it’s deadly…

I understand the reticence about not wanting to discuss sphincters, I’m just one of those oversharing sort of people 😂

    2. Ha ha! 😀 Each to his own. I can’t change the way you sphinct. (Sorry! I couldn’t stop myself.)

  2. I think being a night owl has helped with my jet lag. I don’t usually suffer from it, and if I am running on good sleep I can stay up all day and sleep at the usual time I go to sleep. Finally you are on board with the NBN. I do think Australia is still behind in terms of Internet speeds compared to other countries.

    1. I think my weird sleep patterns also help.

I wonder if 5G will be a better solution.

  3. Do I get sphincter clenching anxiety when something you don’t like may happen? Unfortunately yes.

  4. Jetlag coming back from the east never seems as bad. always try staying awake the first day back, a hard reset back to local time. Doesn’t always work 🤪

Over the last 8+ months a lot of people have moved onto the NBN at work. We have one rule, the worse your broadband before the NBN, the better it will be after.

I went from 22mbps on ADSL2 to 27mbps on NBN, barely enough for 4K on Netflix. Given you are less than 10 think you’ll be fine 😀I look forward to more YouTube uploads!

    1. I’ve had some bad jet lag experiences, so I’m grateful this trip wasn’t a bad one.

I’m really hoping the NBN makes a big difference. It’s annoying to have to switch to 4G some evenings when ADSL2 feels like a sedated slug.

    2. Phone coverage at my house isn’t great. When my internet stops working I’ve been known to drive 2min down the road with my phone and my iPad to offline a bunch of YouTube and Netflix.

    3. That sucks. The signal strength where I am isn’t strong but it’s good enough to get me by in a pinch. I really hope 5G is the solution people seem to speculate it is.
