Good Friday traditions and my weight goes up

Good Friday traditions and my weight goes up

Do you have Good Friday traditions? I started one a couple of years ago when I cooked beef ribs and broke a tooth. I did it last year too sans broken tooth though. Each time I cooked the beef ribs in the oven, this year I went with the slow cooker.

Check out this year’s cook towards the end of this post.

It’s probably no surprise if you’ve been reading this blog and Yummy Lummy that I’ve fallen off the low carb wagon and I’m enjoying all things sugar and spice…

My weight has been steadily increasing. The only thing keeping it in some sort of check I think has been walking 40 minutes every morning when I get up at about 4.30 am. That’s why you see so many Owl Statue photographs.

Richmond

It’s been a good week. I went to Richmond (NSW) this week for work. It was my first time there. I enjoyed a really nice beef burger with special sauce from the restaurant in the Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley.

Reconnecting with friends

This week I reconnected with a friend who I lost contact with a couple of years ago. It feels good to be reconnected and chatting again.

Rental inspection

Thanks to Jane and Matt last week, my rental inspection went smoothly. It’s been a pleasure being able to go out onto the balcony and patio without all the red dusty dirt.

What have I watched this week?

Aquaman (2018)

I had to laugh when Mera (played by Amber Heard) said she had diplomatic immunity at border control. I wonder if she thought she had diplomatic immunity when she and Johnny Depp brought their dogs onto Australian soil and breached our biosecurity law.

Star Trek: Discovery

Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2

Wow, just wow. I thought Airiam’s death was sad, but the death of Admiral Cornwall had me in tears. It was an almost perfect season finale. The scenes between the sixth and seventh signals were some of the best Star Trek ever.

I wonder now where Season 3 will take us and the future of Michael Burnham. The end of Season 2 puts us back on track with canon in terms of Spock.

The death of Admiral Cornwall is in some part offset by the performance of Rebecca Alie Romijn as Number One.

There’s been speculation about a spin off Pike series which I assume will feature Number One and Spock. As much as I like the idea, given the finite nature of Pike’s existence, it could end up being too much of a good thing and end badly.

Star Trek: Deep Space 9

Ferengi Love Songs

A great episode with lots of Quark and a good sprinkling of Leeta and Dax. I’m a fan of General Martok’s brand of discipline but as you’d expect Captain Sisko disagrees.

National Rugby League

I haven’t taken the time to watch any games this week. I’m hanging out for Sunday’s match between the Brisbane Broncos and the Canberra Raiders. There’s no prize for guessing who I want to win the game.

LAW & ORDER

I’ve started watching Season 9 and Abbie Carmichael played by Angie Harmon appears for the first time. While all the other ADAs have been good, the character of Abbie Carmichael stands apart as better.

Her performance in the Season 9 finale is outstanding.

What have I listened to this week?

Mission Pod

Commentary on Star Trek: Discovery “Such Sweet Sorrow: Part 1”

It was interesting hearing a fan’s comment about the futility of sending Sphere’s data into the future. Control can just go into sleep mode and wait. It will eventually reach the time, gain access to Sphere’s data and then be able to move through time and assimilate Michael Burnham.

What have I eaten and photographed this week?

Yummy Lummy

True to my Good Friday tradition, I cooked beef short ribs in the slow cooker. In the fast cooker, aka, pressure cooker I used rice and quinoa to absorb all the beef fat, beef juices, beef stock, and red wine.

Final thoughts

  • Do you have any Good Friday traditions or Easter traditions?
  • Have you been to Richmond?
  • Is canon important to you when it comes to a TV or movie franchise?

  1. No Good Friday traditions at all Gaz but I do love the look of the smashed avocado on the wholegrain toast – looks delicious.

  2. Don’t have much Good Friday traditions. Growing up in certain countries there wasn’t Good Friday or an Easter holiday. So here in Australia it is nice to get a few days off.

That beef burger looks amazing. Good size too 😀

    1. Thanks Mabel. It was a great burger. I’ve now finished all the beef. I made a low carb burrito with the final aliquot today.

  3. The season finale of Discovery was wonderful. I really want more now. The whole running jumping thing was very exciting. The visuals from all the jumps made me want to watch Space Odyssey: 2001.

With Oroville wrapping up this week too I’m going to go back to old Trek for my sci fi hit.

    1. This was a really good season of Star Trek. In many ways it harked back to TOS but with a lot more energy and action. At times, I found that distracting, but the essence of Star Trek was definitely there. Now the wait for next year.
