Post-Ekka blues

As I bang this out on my iPad keyboard, I’ve got the post Eka blues. I’m feeling a little sorry for myself. I feel like a human bag of snot. It’s not quite manflu but I have pharyngitis, rhinorrhoea, headache, and a barking cough. I’m not febrile, however, I do feel lethargic and fatigued from lack of sleep.

It’s not uncommon, after the Ekka to develop an infectious disease. With so many people in close proximity, the risk of exposure to a communicable disease is high. The statistics for influenza, which is a good sentinel for such behaviour, is evident. In southeast Queensland, after the Ekka, comes a wave of influenza plus many of the other non-notifiable communicable upper respiratory viral infections. I just hope my daughters don’t get ill also.

It’s not as if we aren’t careful. My daughters use alcohol-based hand antiseptics appropriately. When it’s needed and not excessively.

At least I don’t have the real post Ekka blues, that is, post-influenza depression. This is a fair dinkum condition albeit uncommon. In fact, after a lot of serious infections, depression can be an ongoing factor which affects long term recovery.

I’ve always been interested in post-infectious phenomena. Notably, the vascular and coagulation defects which can occur.

A non-event

For the last few weeks, I’ve been preparing for an important work-related meeting. It was being held on Thursday just after midday. Just before 11.30 am I received a call from the secretariat and I was told the meeting needed to be postponed to a yet to be determined date.

The good thing is I’d done the preparation and I had all the information filed. If this meeting eventuates, I’ll be prepared without the need to put in a huge amount of effort to get all the information together.

Cupcakes and stuff

A friend at work organised the annual RSPCA cupcake fundraising drive again this year and everyone outdid themselves with cupcakes. I certainly indulged in cupcakes. Four cupcakes!

Cupcakes may well be a decent treatment for post Ekka blues.

What I ate this week

I normally load a gallery for this but Gutenberg and WordPress are conspiring against me at the moment. Gutenberg doesn’t seem to do galleries very well and my WordPress host, Hostgator, seems to have problems with loading images at the moment. I seeing lots of errors and it’s getting excruciating to upload images. It’s taking an age. I know it’s not Internet speed or bandwidth. I’ve tested that and this is a host problem. The thing is I don’t want to change hosts. I don’t have the patience to do that. I think to change hosts I’d need to take time off and dedicate time to it. It’s just not worth it. The good thing is customer support with Hostgator is pretty good, it’s responsive, and every time I make contact the problem is fixed but it recurs for reasons I can’t understand.

Monday dinner

Baked salmon with a fennel salad.

Monday dinner. Baked seeded salmon with fennel and avocado lime salad. I coated the salmon in olive oil and then sesame and poppy seeds before baking for 15 minutes at 200 °C/400 °F. I chopped fennel, red onion, spring onion and parsley and added chilli flakes, lime zest, lime juice, olive oil, and white vinegar. Seasoned with iodised salt and black pepper. I 💚 lime and 🥑

Creamy minced (ground) beef

Tuesday dinner. Minced beef 🥩with mushrooms 🍄, served with avocado 🥑 and sour cream. I stir-fried fennel, spring onion, red onion, and mushrooms 🍄 and then added the minced/ground beef 🥩. I cooked this through with a slug of red wine and Worcestershire sauce. Seasoned with iodised salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and Sichuan seasoning. Finished with butter and cream until a thick sauce forms. Served with avocado 🥑, sour cream and parsley.

Curry crab for dinner

Wednesday dinner. Hot and spicy curry crab 🦀 meat. I stir-fried red onion, spring onion, ginger, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds in a little sesame oil. I added the garlic powder, Sichuan seasoning, curry powder, green peppercorns, and black pepper, and stirred until everything was coated in flavour and the onion was soft. I then added the crab meat and stirred so that the crab meat was coated in all the hot and spicy flavours. I then added half a tin of coconut cream, lime zest, and lime juice. I simmered until the sauce had thickened. I served with parsley garnish and lime quarters.

Final thoughts

  2. I do hope you feel better soon–I wonder how far illness can travel? My sister and her family are sick, too. Mum and I are staying away!
    Your meals look scrumptious and I love all the cuppy cakes. I enjoy making and decorating those. Little Bear doesn’t care for too much fru fru on top, he says it detracts from the overall eating of the cake.
    Query. What do you use forceps for in cooking?

    1. Thanks Kris, I still feel like a bag of snot.
      I agree, if the cake is really nice, there’s no need to the icing on top.
      I use the forceps with a curved needle to sew up the cavities of poultry when I fill them with stuffing.

    Get well soon. Being sick but not sick enough to just lie around is just annoying. Usually I’d rather sick hit me in one whole horrid day.

    1. Post-influenza depression is a thing. It’s not well described but it is written about in the medical and lay press. That’s not to say post-head cold depression is a thing. I think I have the blues mainly because I’m unwell and I wish I was still in Brisbane with my daughters and enjoying the weather.
      Yep, I think after a week, I need a treat 😂
      I’m feeling worse at the moment. I feel really congested at the moment with a headache and a cough.

    4. $20 KFC voucher :O It is a pretty decent amount. You could buy enough KFC to put away and make KFC meals every day 😃 Going down fast. May our colds be over and done with 😃😃

    5. It came with a $25 voucher which I’ve already used after an error with the KFC app. I made a double payment and I was refunded with an extra $10.
      I think I may get KFC Nugs. That will help with my cold.
      I agree, may our health improve and we both be healthful.
