I was on TV | This is not a drill

I was on TV

I mentioned last week that I was in Melbourne recently to participate in a hypothetical pandemic exercise. “This is not a drill” is a series produced by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) journalist and broadcaster, Ali Moore. This particular program was titled, “Fowl Plague”.

Ali Moore wrote this piece on 6 September 2018 for the University of Melbourne.

Ali’s piece was republished in Open Forum

The program was broadcast on Friday night on ABC News (Channel 24 on Australian dials). It will be replayed on Sunday night at 10 pm local time for Australians watching free to air TV. Anyone in Australia will then be able to view it on the ABC iView app. I hope to get a link for people outside Australia to view it if they wish.

Stop Press (updated Tuesday 18 September 2018)

The show is now on iView for people in Australia.

It will be available in iView until 16 October 2018.

It’s a bit weird watching myself on TV. This was the first time I’d had makeup applied. The lights were very bright and my bald pate is very shiny. Normally, someone with Ichthyosis vulgaris wouldn’t have shiny skin, but the moisturiser  I use leaves a waxy sheen. Anyway, a lot of powder was needed to dull the shine and reduce the reflected light causing lens flare like a Jar Jar Abrams movie.

It was pretty cool to be in the company of some very clever people who know a lot more than I do about pandemics of infectious diseases.

Spring and hay fever

The blooms are out. I didn’t need to see the flowers, the copious flow of watery snot from my nose is a better signal for this season.

What I’ve watched this week

Last night while I was writing a post for Yummy Lummy, I watched one of my favourite movies. The Hunt for Red October. This is a classic movie with Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, and New Zealand’s Sam Neil. A highlight for me is that Gates McFadden plays Jack Ryan’s wife in the opening scene. I’ve always thought she should have been credited given she had a speaking role. For readers who are unfamiliar with Gates McFadden, she plays Dr Beverly Crusher the Chief Medical Officer on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 D (and E) in Star Trek: The Next Generation and she is my favourite Star Trek doctor.

The soundtrack for The Hunt for Red October really matches the action of the movie well. The only thing that is out of place is Sean Connery speaking Russian with a Scottish accent.

I may need to watch another submarine movie soon. Maybe, Crimson Tide starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.

What I ate this week

Last week on Yummy Lummy I slowly cooked beef short ribs and beef cheeks which I ate with some Gentleman’s relish. I had enough leftover beef and relish to keep me going for many nights last week. One of the good things about living alone is being able to cook a large meal and enjoy leftovers for days afterwards.

Final thoughts

  • Did you know the ABC was originally the Australian Broadcasting Company? It then became the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and then in 1983 became the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. I grew up with the Commission and that’s how I remember the ABC.
  • Have you ever been on TV?
  • What’s your favourite submarine movie?

First week back at work

  1. How interesting you were on TV Gaz. You are clearly very knowledgeable i(and an expert) n your field; well done. Loving to hear the flowers are blooming – looking forward to seeing them when I return from China early October.

    1. Thanks very much Sue. I really enjoyed the event. It took me back to 2009 when I was the incident coordinator for pandemic H1N1. We’ve learnt a lot of lessons since then on how to do things.

  2. Absolutely fun stuff!!! From Youtube to the big screen. Hooray!!!!!
Favorite submarine movie–Operation Petticoat. Black and white and full of giggling.

    1. Oh I’d forgotten about Operation Petticoat. I remember watching that as a boy. I loved it.

  3. You were on TV 😃 A moment of fame, Gaz. That orange tie looked very eye catching. I’m surprised you were allowed on with it. Might have been distracting 😆 I’ve never been on TV before, but I’ve hosted radio shows on community radio a while back, with the occasional guest appearance and interviews on some shows.

Not one to see many movies of late but Crimson Tide does ring a bell 👌😃

    1. Thanks Mabel. I was asked to wear something light and bright. I explained I only have a black suit and a navy sports jacket. I went with a white shirt and a bright tie.
It was a good experience. In all about 80 minutes was recorded but it had to be edited a lot to get to 59 minutes for the program.

    2. You got the message lour and clear, light and bright. For if you wore something dark or maybe a dark jacket, you might literally be blending into the background 😃

    3. That was Ali’s concern. I’m really impressed with the way she has put this project together.

    4. Maybe you will get invited back on your show. Or get invited onto other shows after this bit of impressive air time.

    5. You’re very kind Mabel. It would only happen with permission from my bosses. I was fortunate this time.

    6. Ah, yes, appearing on television sometimes you do have to get permission from bosses and think about who you are representing. Well, if and when you do become Prime Minister, you could have a TV segment once a day 😃

  4. I hope to be able to see your ’15 minutes of fame’ eventually. I’ve always liked Red October (Sean Connery fan) … have you seen the Jack Ryan series? An 8 ep miniseries. I still have to watch the last 2 (was binging the first 6 eps). I believe it’s been renewed on Netflix?

    1. I’m yet to see the Jack Ryan miniseries. I hope I can get it on a streaming service. Netflix Australia doesn’t always have everything that Netflix Canada and Netflix USA has.

    2. I enjoyed it … hopefully you’ll get a chance to see it eventually. Have you seen Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries? It’s from your part of the world. 🙂

    3. I haven’t heard of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. I’ll have to take a look and check it out.

    4. Wow, there are only about 5 min left and I’m very impressed. I think it’s a great must watch for nursing/health care workers and other medical professionals even if actual procedures and agencies differ in different countries/states/provinces.

At the beginning I was just skipping to your parts but for the last half I was watching the whole thing.
