Floriade 2018 Welcome to Canberra WE ARE CBR
Floriade 2018 is here again and it’s time for Canberra to show of its colours with its internationally famous bulb festival.

One of the annual highlights of living in Canberra (CBR) is the spring bulb festival known as Floriade.
I really like Floriade. It’s free to get in and while there is a little bit of carnival atmosphere, I never purchase anything while I’m there. This year, I didn’t even buy a coffee. I just walked around and soaked up the colours of the bulbs.
The morning started with a partial bridge to bridge walk because one of the secrets I’ll share of visiting Floriade is to get there early and to park somewhere across Lake Burley Griffin. That way you’re not stuck in a ridiculously and poorly managed temporary car park that the ACT Government seems to think is adequate for the event.
I expect when the >AUD$1 billion tram line is finished there will be some deal for people to drive to Gunghalin and then catch the tram and somehow get from civic to the event itself.
I apologise, my writing has become a little cynical and sarcastic. I shouldn’t let that happen when really, I do enjoy walking around in the sunshine looking at pretty colourful flowers.

Highlights from this week
I’ve enjoyed a pretty good week. I’ve been busy at work and the weather has been slowly getting warmer. Canberra is still experiencing subzero (Celsius) mornings, but the days are approaching and sometimes exceeding 20 °C. The blossoms are out and leaves are budding on the deciduous trees.
I’ve received some pretty good and positive feedback after appearing on TV a couple of weeks ago. If you live in Australia and want to see the panel I was on, you can watch it on ABC iView. The link will only be available up until 16 October 2018.
The CBR signage
I’ve written before about this bit of wankery. Around the world, CBR is the acronym for Chemical, Biological, and Radiation threats. Why did the ACT Government employ a public relations group to exploit this?

Final thoughts
Do you like bulbs?
What’s your favourite thing about Canberra?
What do you like doing in Spring?
I just love seeing what you eat every week G. Loving your Floriade photos. And wow weather sounds great during the days back home.
Thanks Sue, you’re very kind. While I worry that Floriade is diminishing every year, I do love the colours of bulbs. It really makes me feel happy to be surrounded by vibrant colours.
Bulbs are my favorite plants. Except when the rodents eat them. I loved all the pansies and violas. Are the garden gnomes popular down there? Also, crushed peanut seems to be a favorite of yours. How do you do this? 🤔🤔
From what I can make out, Kris, garden gnomes aren’t a big feature of home gardens here in Canberra.
Floriade though has a gnome painting competition for school and pre-school children. It’s one of the features of Floriade I like to visit and check out the handiwork of the local kids.
Sometimes, I buy crushed nuts, but mostly, I put nuts into a plastic ziplock bag and I use a mallet or a heavy metal object to bang the nuts into bits and pieces.
I love the painting program! I’d adore a kid painted collection of garden gnomes in my yard. I could see the boys painting progress as they marched thru humanoid statuary.
Sounded like a colourful time at Floriade 2018. A sunny day too. I’d be wary going to these flower displays as lovely as they look for blooming plants give my hay fever. What I like about Spring is the weather warming up. Looks like Melbourne is back yo mid 10’C next week.
Thanks Mabel. I’m relying on antihistamines to keep my mucous membranes from overflowing.
It was nice being outside in the sun and enjoying lots of pretty colours.
Good to hear antihistamines work for you. I’d rather not take them as they make we feel worse lol. Hopefully those chilly mornings subside for you soon and summer will be here soon enough.
It looks like the lowest it will get this week is 1 °C. That’s not too bad for September.
I’ve got a bit of travel this week so I’ll experience some warm weather in Sydney and Jervis Bay I hope.
