Eights years blogging

Eight years blogging achievement
Blogging anniversary

Eight years

Eight years ago I ventured into blogging. Up until about March 2010, I had no social media accounts. I started with Google Buzz and then went to Twitter.

From Twitter I saw these links to blogs and started wondering if I could write a blog.

In October 2010, I set up a WordPress.com blog as a rant and rave site, but then I rediscovered a fondness for photographing my meals and thought about blogging about what I cook and eat.

It wasn’t long after that a friend at work suggested the name Yummy Lummy and since then I’ve moved from a WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress.org blog.

A few years ago, I thought I’d try podcasting short nuggets of information and had a Medical Fun Facts podcast and blog. Earlier this year, I decided to just focus on food. So I’ve got a reasonably nice rhythm now on Yummy Lummy, while this blog, viz., My Thoughts and Stuff, is a diary blog.

The thing I love about blogging is that it’s a hobby which encompasses technology, cooking, photography, and meeting new people from all over the world.

I love that people from all over the world visit and leave a comment and I can have a chat with them.

A few people are regular readers here and over at Yummy Lummy and I feel like we’re proper friends.

I’m not sure how long I’ll blog for. From time to time I wonder why I do it. I find it relaxing and I still get a kick out of shooting a photograph and then seeing it in a blog post.

Daylight saving

Oh, how I loathe this time of year and the changeover to so-called daylight saving (DLS). No daylight is saved, and none is lost.

I wish the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia didn’t persist with DLS. I have no use for light in the late afternoon and early evening. I like it to be light when I wake up and get out of bed at 4.30 am rather than black.

At least, most Queenslanders, have the good sense not to succumb to the ridiculous notion. That said, I’m aware there are people living in South East Queensland, especially on the Gold Coast who would like to split the state into two time zones.

While I was born and raised in Brisbane, I think I’m more aligned with Queenslanders from the north of the state.

Final thoughts

If you’re a blogger, how long have you been doing it?

Do you like daylight saving time? If you do, why?

Are you enjoying the Spring (or Autumn if your in the Northern Hemisphere) weather?

  1. Eight years – well done Gary. Well I hope you continue as you know I really enjoy your blogs. Gee it’s cold here today – after arriving home yesterday to a lovely warm day.

    1. Thanks Sue, it’s been a lot of fun, and meeting people is the best part. As you have arrived home, I’m currently in Geneva for a work meeting. The weather is very similar to Canberra. Cool but not dry. The water jet fountain in Lake Geneva had me thinking Captain Cook Fountain in Lake Burly Griffin. Except, the fountain here seems to work all the time 😃

  2. Congratulations on your blogging anniversary Gary. I totally agree with you about DLS. I remember how difficult it was to get our children to bed at night in summer due to the heat and would hate to be settling children down for bed an hour earlier. I love summer evenings when the sun goes down and it cools down a little.

    1. Thanks Sharon
Yep I remember our kitchen faced west and it was really hot at night when we were trying to eat dinner.
I really like a light morning. It’s much easier to go walking in the morning that way.

  3. Congrats on eight years blogging Gaz! A milestone and looks like you had a timely McNug treat 🍗😃 This month I’ll be celebrating six years since I put up my first blog post. I blog because I like writing and so why not share what I write there. The engagement side of it is fun and totally agree some regular readers are like proper friends 😃

I’m definitely on the fence when it comes to daylight savings. I do like light when I wake up at 5-7am but I also like it when the sun sets 8-9pm.

Spring is still cool here and I wish summer would hurry up and come 😃

    1. Thanks Mabel. Well done you on six years. I love your writing. The care and research you do is always so evident. I like when I see the e-mail notifying me there is a new post from you because I know it will be a good read.

It usually takes me a week to get used to daylight saving time. At least for the next few days, I won’t want to go to bed at 7.30, it’ll be 8.30 😂

    2. Thanks, Gaz. I don’t subscribe via email to your blog, but I pop over on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in the evenings and always a post from you. Part of my routine 😃

Good luck getting to bed on time. This morning I went to bed at 2am, which was 3am and didn’t manage to sleep til after 4am 😆😂

    3. I don’t know how you do it. I’ve already eaten dinner and I’m getting ready for this week.
You really are a night owl 😃
I hope you can sleep more easily tonight.

    4. I am indeed a night owl. Also eaten dinner already 😃 Your bed time soon and maybe time for you to watch something or unwind 😃

    5. I reckon I’ll be in bed and listen to a podcast and drift off 😃😃😃

    6. I’ve got a big week ahead, so if I take some time now to get my head in a good place, it’ll be good 😃
I wish weekends lasted longer though 😃👍

    7. Big week probably means something interesting will happen 😃 When you become Prime Minister, you can suggest 3-day weekends 😃😃

    8. Haha, yep, so long as everyone works so the economy doesn’t go south.
I’ve got some travel ahead, but hopefully, I’ll have time to write something for next week 😃👍

    9. Travel means it will be an interesting week for your diet. Looking forward to reading about that 😃😃

    10. Yea, it often plays a bit of havoc. I’ve sort of decided not to worry and think that I might kick start things again in a week or two.
